Buzzword Bingo: Navigating Corporate Jargon in the Consulting World

When any group of people gather and work together, a funny phenomenon occurs: jargon. In the realm of business, corporate jargon takes hold, often turning conversations into a minefield of ambiguity wrapped in buzzwords.

Amidst all the pivoting and circling back, it can get hard to know where one RFP ends and another BPO begins!

In this post, we dive into some of the most popular phrases we’ve come across, offering some enlightening definitions along the way.

“Let’s Circle Back”

This classic phrase often floats around meetings like a self-fulfilling boomerang—difficult to intercept and full of uncertainty. It’s the perfect way to avoid immediate answers while keeping the door open for future discussions and more endless circling.

“On the Same Page”

When consultants use the expression “let’s make sure we’re on the same page,” it’s usually in response to the confusion hovering over a project. It’s a rallying cry of the bewildered, attempting to gain more clarity and alignment collectively.

“Pivot”

Ah, the consultant’s favorite word in the era of rapid change! Pivots can be exhilarating; after all, who doesn’t love a good plot twist?

“Pushback”

This innocuous phrase sounds far better than what it can sometimes really mean (staff non-engagement, heated disagreements, or outright corporate rebellion)! When used sparingly and appropriately however, it’s a term that can validate differing opinions while still maintaining a sense of collaboration.

“Drill Down”

Another favorite that offers an impressive visual of people with drills (safety goggles on, of course) dissecting complicated data until they hit something useful. In practice, it means: “Let’s scrutinise this assumption, project or process until we really get to the root and uncover something enlightening.”

“Move the Needle”

This implies one is looking for tangible results that will lead to real impact and sustainable change.

Finding Clarity Amidst the Jargon

While phrases bring a certain charm to our professional exchanges, it’s crucial to recognise their potential downsides. These expressions often obscure meaning and can derail effective communication. While corporate jargon can feel like insider language that binds us together, it can just as easily alienate colleagues and clients.

In an age where clarity is king, let’s toast to the possibility of being straightforward and sincere in our interactions. After all, genuine dialogue trumps corporate speak any day, leading to healthier relationships, better understanding, and—ultimately—a more effective consulting approach. Cheers to fewer circles and more straight lines!
