Implementing Change

SUMMARY:

Just 26% of organisational transformational change initiatives are considered to be successful. Include a software implementation as a critical dependency to that change, and those odds will likely be even less. Our client in the oil and gas industry faced just this challenge as they set out to significantly overhaul their existing software. Approached to create a robust change management toolkit to ensure a successful, widespread and sustainable adoption, we set to work.

KEY CHALLENGES:

  • The focus had been primarily on the tech change. The impact on processes and people had not been taken into consideration.
  • The change was communicated before it was fully understood and its impact fully appreciated, increasing uncertainty levels.
  • Users had been trained on the new software before it was fully functional, which created a lack of trust in its ability to replace the existing solution adequately.

THE ANALYZE SOLUTION:

In our experience, the success of software implementations has far less to do with the technology itself, and far more to do with how equipped or ill-equipped the end users are to manage the change before them.

With this in mind, we partnered with the project team to gain a better understanding of how the software implementation would impact both clients and staff from a people and process perspective.
This involved defining a change management toolkit and applying it to the project.

By successfully embedding a change management strategy into this software implementation, we were able to anticipate and manage the impact on users, thereby reducing the amount of
support required for users post-implementation whilst drastically increasing overall adoption rates.
